Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery or maxillary osteotomy, is used to treat various conditions relating to the alignment of the jaws and teeth. At Smile Orthodontics, when the patient has an improper bite due to malocclusions, an orthodontist may recommend braces in combination with orthognathic surgery to correct the problem. An improper bite can lead to complications, including impacted teeth and difficulty chewing and biting food. Corrective jaw surgery may also be recommended with orthodontic treatment for aesthetic reasons. It may be used to correct the appearance of protruding front teeth or a “gummy” smile. These procedures are generally performed under general anesthesia and require several hours.

Who Needs Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery can correct a wide range of issues affecting the jaw and teeth, including:

  • Difficulty chewing or biting down
  • Speech problems
  • Facial appearance issues
  • Sleep apnea
  • Tooth loss
  • TMJ disorders

The Benefits of Orthognathic Surgery

One of the most common orthodontic treatment types is orthognathic or corrective jaw surgery. This type of treatment can be necessary when the upper and lower jaws do not meet correctly or teeth do not seem to fit with the jaws when the mouth is closed. Corrective jaw surgery can improve chewing and speaking and the overall appearance of the facial profile.

During your consultation for corrective jaw surgery, our dentist will discuss the details of the procedure and any preparation required before undergoing the procedure. This usually involves taking X-rays of your mouth and possibly scheduling a CT scan of your facial bones. These are done to determine the appropriate treatment plan for you.

Before beginning your corrective jaw surgery, you will be given anesthesia, so you do not feel pain during the procedure. Then our dentist will cut away parts of your jawbones so that the teeth are moved into their correct positions. Often, a small piece of bone from elsewhere in your body will fill the gap where the jawbone was cut. Once the correct position is achieved, the incisions will be sutured closed. Complete healing can take up to a year to complete. During this time, a temporary denture may be worn to make your new smile look complete. Once your treatment is completed, you will no longer be embarrassed by your smile, and you will be able to enjoy all of the benefits of a healthy bite and a beautiful smile.
